Whenever their child is on the road going to school, to the mall, to a friend's house, or going on a road trip parents wants them to be safe and to follow safety and defensive driving.

Car accident is the leading killer of teens between the ages of 16 and 19.

Here are some tips to make sure that your child is following basic safety guidelines for new drivers that can prevent a tragic accident:

  • Make them wear seat belt at all times when driving. It is proven to protect lives in case of an accident.
  • Turn-off cell phones to resist the urge of answering calls and text messages. A distracted driving is as dangerous as drunk driving
  • Follow speed limit. About 40% of fatal accidents involving teen drivers are the result of speeding.
  • Educate your child not to drink and drive or ride with a drunk driver.
  • Since most of car accidents caused by teen drivers occur between the hours of 9 pm and 3 am. Advice your kids not to drive during the later evening hours.
Make sure that your kids know that driving with friends increase the risk of being in an accident about three-fold when there are other young teen passengers in the vehicle. They should first drive solo or with an adult to gain more experience in driving and fine tune their driving skills.

Teen drivers must be extremely cautious and aware of their limits due to lack of experience. You can help your kid to improve their response time by monitoring how they drive and guiding them to be a defensive driver.
